Il paradigma dei verbi inglesi

Per coniugare un verbo inglese basta conoscerne il suo paradigma. Questo è l’insieme delle voci fondamentali di un verbo, da cui si formano tutti i tempi verbali.

Il paradigma dei verbi inglesi è costituito da tre voci verbali:

  • La forma base - dal quale si forma l’infinito (infinitive in inglese) facendola precedere dal “to”. Questa forma è quella che si trova nel dizionario (ad esempio “go”, “love”, “run”);
  • Il simple past (che in italiano corrisponde ai tempi passato remoto, all'imperfetto e al passato prossimo);
  • Il past participle (o participio passato in italiano, ad esempio “mangiato”, “conquistato”, …).

Note queste 3 forme, coniugare un verbo inglese in tutti i modi e le persone è piuttosto facile.

 

 

Queste 3 voci vengono usate per costruire i vari tempi dei verbi inglesi - facendo anche uso dei verbi ausiliari – secondo la seguente tabella:

Come nella lingua italiana, esistono verbi che si coniugano secondo regole ben definite (i verbi regolari) e altri verbi che non seguono regole vere e proprie e vanno imparati a memoria (i verbi irregolari). Ma niente panico, i verbi irregolari più importanti sono davvero pochi.

 

Il paradigma dei verbi inglesi regolari

Per quanto riguarda i verbi inglesi regolari, ricavarne il paradigma è molto semplice. Qui vogliamo invece soffermarci sui verbi irregolari, in quanto il verbo di cui puoi trovare la coniugazione e il paradigma più in alto è un verbo irregolare.

 

 

Il paradigma dei verbi inglesi irregolari

I verbi inglesi irregolari sono quei verbi che non aggiungono il suffisso -ed alla loro forma base quando si devono coniugare al simple past e al past participle. Questi verbi non seguono nessuna regola (da qui la loro definizione di verbi irregolari) e vanno imparati a memoria. Sono verbi importantissimi nella lingua inglese, basti pensare che i 10 verbi più usati in inglese sono tutti irregolari (mangiare, bere, correre, andare, sentire, dare, conoscere, …). Per nostra fortuna però i verbi irregolari sono solo una piccola frazione di tutti i verbi inglesi, circa duecento.

Tra i verbi irregolari ci sono alcune caratteristiche comuni che possono aiutare nella memorizzazione dei paradigmi. Vediamo qui alcuni gruppi che comprendono i verbi più usati:

  • Per alcuni verbi le tre forme verbali del paradigma sono le stesse, ovvero la forma base, il past simple e il past participle sono uguali tra loro. Tali verbi finiscono per -t o per -d. Ma attenzione, non tutti i verbi irregolari che finiscono per -t o per -d hanno le tre forme verbali identiche.
    • Esempi: bet, bid, cut, fit, hit, let, put, quit, read, set;
    • Esempi di verbi con forme verbali diverse: beat, build, eat, find.
  • Ci sono poi solo 3 verbi molto usati per i quali l’infinito e il past participle hanno la stessa forma ma il simple past cambia. Questi sono become, come e run. Fanno parte di questo gruppo anche alcuni verbi derivati da questi 3 (overcome, overrun);
  • Altri verbi hanno il simple past e past participle uguali tra loro e terminanti con il suffisso -ught. Ad esempio think/thought/thought. Altri verbi di uso molto comune appartenenti a questo gruppo sono bring, buy, fight, teach.

Come detto, si possono trovare altre caratteristiche comuni a più verbi irregolari. Qui sopra abbiamo riportato solo le caratteristiche più semplici e quelle che coinvolgono alcuni dei verbi più usati.
